This dark and dreamy album explores technology-related modern dating downfalls, feeling disconnected from a social sphere, and more.
Nashville, TENNESSEE (April 21, 2023) - Gothic Pop-Synth musical artist, Yew Haiku, is releasing her new album Century Gothic at the end of April 2023. This 5-song album contains themes of modern dating downfalls, how technology has changed emotional connection, fear of economic collapse, feeling largely disconnected from a peer group while trying to fit into one, and more. The lyrically dreamy album contains a tinge of darkness from time to time, with lyrics such as, "An endless dream became a nightmare..." from the track Real Eyes Realize Real Lies. Yew Haiku expresses that this album was inspired by, "visions of unnecessary technological expanse encroaching upon human nature and psychological faculties," and wanting to make time stand still by capturing this notion within the music.
This album consistently oscillates between sentiments of mourning and acceptance. One of the songs on the album, Dream Sequence, was written in an attempt to harness the meditative potential of sound design. Another track, Peach Nietzsche, is about navigating the presence of despair creeping into what seems like an ideal life situation. The album's second track Experience or Turing is meant to portray the story of hypothetically receiving a sentimental letter from a "perfectly curated" AI love interest. The dialogue of the song consists of the AI lover warning the infatuated girl to stay away from him, although she thinks she loves him. The other tracks on the album transcend from fantasy and touch back to earth by tapping into more traditional themes such as unrequited love.
To note: Yew Haiku will be releasing a music video for Peach Nietzsche sometime this summer 2023!
About Yew Haiku:
Yew Haiku is the songwriting project of Fuschia Smith. Equal parts Hot Topic Goth Shaman and Sonic Top Ramen, Smith blurs lines stylistically. Formed in isolation, the project spawned the 2021 single Psy and Cygnet with assistance from LANND's own Brian Squillace. In 2023’s release Smith acts as producer presenting a pastiche of synth, guitar solos, and stoic lyrical themes. What remains is a sense of something arcane yet experimental. As much an homage to Judy Garland as it is Kraftwerk, she reimagines lost kittens, star lore, and failed romance in a synthy Victorian mourning ritual. The first single, Peach Nietzsche, was inspired by the Heart Sutra, a Zen chant that is meant to take us back to beginner’s mind, a precious zero point that can allow us to accept the saccharine and the sour.
