You do the things that keep the peace, that keep people close, that keep the surface calm, and then one day you look up and find you have drifted somewhere you never meant to go. That feeling, of being pushed into unfamiliar emotional water and bracing for a landing that may not come, runs through every song on Diving.
Out July 17, 2026, Diving is the new album from Northern Virginia alt-pop artist Aidan Leclaire, a seven-track record that moves between the urgency of late-night rock and the quiet of early-morning reckoning. Written and recorded across four studios with a rotating cast of producers and the full involvement of Leclaire's band, it is the most ambitious project the group has put to tape.
Artists like blink-182, Brand New, and Green Day built a tradition where loud guitars and bruised honesty live in the same three minutes, where a hook can carry a confession. Diving steps into that lineage on its opening run and then keeps walking, past the noise and into something softer and stranger, until the record ends somewhere closer to folk than to punk.
This album has been the most expansive work that we have done. From the number of different recording engineers and producers to the scope of involvement by the band members in shaping the songs, this has been the most professional collaboration and the most fulfilling journey to produce a collection of songs.

Leclaire first emerged in the Washington, DC-area scene in 2023, playing throughout Northern Virginia, Maryland, and DC before assembling the band that now backs the live show. Over the last year the group has built a following across DC, Richmond, Boston, and New York, selling more than 600 tickets across their last four local shows, including two sellouts. Their July 2025 debut album Hail to the Dogs drew praise from indie outlets including Indie Boulevard, which called it "intelligent, thoughtful, and thoroughly engaging." Diving is the sound of that band stretching its range.
Sonically, the record refuses to sit still. The first three tracks, "2:02," "Dive Slow," and "Talk," hit fast and loud, raw alt-rock and pop with the in-your-face energy of the band's punk influences. Then "Lucy" breaks the surface into pure, sunny pop. From there the album sinks into its second half: "Parfait" and "Fishbowl" turn low and mellow, soulful and unhurried, and the closer, "Nature's Tune," drifts into something close to folk.
That descent is the point. "Dive Slow" sets the album's tone early, all forward motion and white lies and the refusal to keep "playing their calls," a song about no longer performing for people who never had your interests at heart. "Lucy" is the record's brightest moment, a carefree pop high about a fascination that pulls you somewhere you know you should not stay. "Nature's Tune" lands the album in stillness, the band stripped back to its most exposed and acoustic, the last word after the noise has burned off.
"I initially tried to balance the album with an even mix of harder-edged, up-tempo songs and softer, mellower ones, but I realized that kind of symmetry doesn't reflect real emotional life. We aren't steady or consistent day to day. We move through highs and lows, sometimes staying in one longer than the other. Sequencing the album so it begins with the heavier tracks and ends with the quieter ones felt truer to the emotional rollercoaster behind it."

Underneath the shifting sound is a single thread: the instinct to please and appease because it feels like the only way to hold a relationship together, and the slow discovery that it leads somewhere you never intended, sometimes hurting yourself or the people you love. Diving also sits in the tension between private struggle and public scale, the guilt of feeling your own troubles loom large against a world of wars and climate and a future that looks bleaker than the one you were promised as a child. The cover art holds the same uncertainty and the sense of not quite knowing where, or when, you are; its blurred, crimson haze making the familiar feel distant and unsteady.
The album arrives as Leclaire continues to gain ground on the East Coast indie circuit, known for energetic sets and a grassroots fanbase grown through word of mouth and a collaborative stage presence that carries the intimacy of the recordings into a room full of people. With Diving, the band makes its widest, most honest statement yet.
