Joel Sammut releases his new 90's grunge-inspired single on April 21st.
Byron Bay, AUSTRALIA (April 21, 2023) - Primal Scream-inspired Australian singer and producer, Joel Sammut, is releasing a new groovy alt-rock track "Trouble" this Friday. The song dives into the theme of risky love and is supported by a cool, sultry rhythm that acts as the glue for each verse. The lyrics within this track constantly juxtapose each other with various tones and repetitive feelings. The first verse relates to love and passion, repeating "I’ll get a love like that, dancing and living heart attack" twice. The chorus switches sentiments immediately, conveying a mysterious conversation between two friends, "Oh yeah, hot damn, Do you think it's risky, Trouble man." Joel wanted to create this stark contrast of emotions to emphasize how themes of love and trouble are often intertwined with one another while falling for someone.
Produced in just under two days, Joel added a beat to the song first, then the bass line, and lastly began adding in the verses and switch-ups. Layered experimental guitar sounds throughout the single are a reference to an early 90's grunge style, laced with interchanging early 80s/90s-inspired hip-hop beats. Additionally, the synth solo at the end of Trouble was inspired by American y2k Indie Rock band Cocorosie and was recorded on a Cat Keyboard Kids Toy that Joel sampled. Joel's old-school hip-hop influences include Beastie Boys and Slick Rick, while his general flare as an artist has been compared to surf-rock singer Mac Demarco.
